Trying hard doesn’t mean you won’t make mistakes!

Activity Sheet

Helping your child to understand that getting things wrong is part of learning and life is an ongoing challenge for parents. It is also an ongoing challenge for many of us to accept this about ourselves!

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Albert Einstein

  • When children are trying really hard, they can easily feel demoralised when they get things wrong.

  • We need to continually help them to understand that this is fine. Mistakes happen when we are trying to master new things. They happen just because we are human.

  • Continually remind your child clearly, kindly and encouragingly that mistakes are okay and we all make them.

  • We see many children making amazing efforts to learn and putting their heart and soul into this effort. It is vitally important to them that they hear the message that this struggle to accomplish things will include mistakes.

  • Talk about mistakes as a family, and what you have learnt from them, so that this becomes accepted and normal.
