Mistakes are Natural! We all learn

Teaching your child that mistakes are a natural part of life and learning, is going help them enormously. When your child is learning something new, they may feel confused and “not quite get it” straight away. Teaching them that this is because they are learning and everyone feels like this, will mean that they will develop the confidence to work through this confusing bit where they make mistakes and that that is just part of learning something new. A teacher once told us a lovely story where everyone in the class celebrated mistakes because they had really started to understand that this was when they would be learning the most!

Try these things to help your child:

• point out to them when you make a mistake and how you overcome this

• praise their effort and not their achievement so that they see this as key “you tried so hard to write all your numbers the right way round today and now you can!”

• find out together about people who have invented amazing things because they usually spent a lot of the time making mistakes and that is how they made their breakthrough!
