Starting the New School Year

As we approach the end of the summer holidays, many children and parents will have mixed emotions. Although it is lovely to have so much time away from routine, in many ways it is a relief getting back to a weekly pattern of activities.

For many children, starting a new year group, and in some cases, a new school, can be an anxious time.

If your child is feeling anxious and worried, remind them that these are completely normal feelings and they will not be alone; many other children will be feeling the same way. Talk to your child about what they are feeling. Try to avoid saying ‘It will be fine,’ or ‘Don’t worry’ – but rather validate their emotions and talk about their fears.

Many children worry about the work being much more difficult, having forgotten all their learning from July, friendships, their teacher being overly strict (maybe they have heard mistaken messages from previous children), having everything ready in time. Once you know what they are worried about, you may be able to discuss the issues and reassure them.

Sometimes children don’t know or can’t explain what it is that is causing the anxiety. They may just need a reassuring hug and to know you are there for them.

Good luck to everyone going back to school this week or next.
